1. Question to current event: Why do you think that Colin Kaepernick’s protest is a cultural conflict?
Academic Article Question:
2. Question to academic Article: Does volunteer tourism help or inhibit cross-cultural understanding? Why?
1. Colin's protests are a cultural conflict because he is defying the cultural expectations for the U.S. national anthem. If you are an able-bodied person, the cultural norm in the U.S. is to stand up for the anthem. So when people started to notice a famous person with a lot of influence do this, they became outraged. What Colin was doing was to represent a much bigger scale cultural conflict, which is police brutality among African Americans.
ReplyDelete2.Volunteer tourism seems to help cross-cultural understanding by allowing the volunteer to work within the country they are touring. It seems to be a mutually beneficial process for both the region and the volunteers, the volunteers could get a better understanding of the culture they are exposed to and yet also spread their culture from their country or inform others about their culture.
1. Brett is certainly not wrong about national anthem participation being a norm for people in the U.S., particularly athletes. Culturally there is an expectation to adhere to the tradition of standing at attention, etc. Additionally, there is the obvious cultural conflict that he is representing: there are several movements advocating for the promotion of people of color, and various other interest groups. There are some less obvious but relevant culture conflicts in terms of individual cultures, like the sports team culture, activist cultures, etc., that while less so the center of attention, still play an important part in these sorts of developments.
ReplyDelete2. Anecdotally, it would be a wash, in my experience. On one hand, volunteerism provides valuable assistance to those that need it, as well as exposure of both sets of cultures. On the other hand, the volunteerism is more of a symptom than a fix, and the nature of volunteerism creates a weird dichotomy. This has been manifested (once again, in my experience) in that other cultures are looked at as nice, but generally economically and scientifically inferior (which, even if we assume is true, doesn't actually help the relationship). The other side of that, is that if the cultures were not in need of a fix to a problem, these descriptions wouldn't be a problem, but also the tourism wouldn't exist. Their proposed solution does kind of sound nice, but I am struggling to see how that would actually be implemented.
1. Its a cultural conflict because he doesn't believe that we are standing up to our cultural values which are being represented in our national anthem.
ReplyDelete2. Volunteer tourism helps cross-cultural understanding because you are able to go out and explore the different cultures and get an understanding of how each persons life style is.
1. In this article, and NFL football player, Kaepernick, decided to sit during the national anthem to show support for people of color who are being oppressed in the US. Although this was an effect to effect change for people who were suffering, he did cause a cultural conflict due to Kaepernick going against the social norm in the US to stand up during the national anthem because different cultural values and beliefs were clashed at this time.
ReplyDelete2. I'm not sure if volunteer tourism helps us inhibit cross-cultural understanding because it could either break or reinforce existing stereotypes of the other culture. If it is reinforced it may deepen talk about the comparison of ‘them and us’.
1- It is a cultural conflict because in american culture it is considered disrespectful not to stand up for the anthem and if someone does not do so, especially someone with a lot of influence like him becomes a cultural conflict.
ReplyDelete2- It helps because it creates a culturally diverse place and people can learn better about other cultures, so it would increase cross-cultural understanding.
1. kaepernicks actions are a cultural conflict because he is going against the cultural norms of the united states. it is a form of respect and american culture to stand at attention and show respect for the flag and national anthem.
ReplyDelete2. I believe volunteer tourism helps because Travel aids in international understanding, tolerance and cultural awareness. Also, volunteering puts the tourists in situations where they are more than just tourists. They can take part in the culture.
1. I think that his sitting for the national anthem is a cultural conflict because as a nation of our size, we do not truly have one grand unifying culture, and instead is made up of many smaller subcultures that tend to share a few core traits which are used to cobble together an idealized American culture. When events occur, such as police violence targeted at minorities, it highlights the preexisting divisions in our subcultures, and the discontinuity between reality and the idealized American culture creates cultural conflict.
ReplyDelete2. In and of itself, volunteer tourism does not help or inhibit cross-cultural understanding, it merely provides an opportunity for that kind of understanding to be created. As pointed out in the paper, such tourism can actually damage cross cultural understanding if not handled properly, and in their comments, the authors point out that the first priority of such trips should be adding something of value to the community being visited. If this has to be mentioned explicitly, it seems reasonable to assume that this is not a generally applied rule of such trips, and as such points out how these trips can be used for selfish gain rather than genuine helping. Going to another nation that you view as in needing of help to gain status or to increase your own feelings of self worth can instead do little to foster any understanding, as well as reinforce stereotypes.
1. Kaepernick's decision to kneel durning the national athem caused a big controversy because to Americans the national anthem shows there history and the fight to be a free country. Yet, white Americans don't experience what african americans go through and they don't understand how that makes them feel. It creates a conflict because there is not a mutual understanding.
ReplyDelete2.What I generally think of volunteer tourism is that the group itself would be incorporated to the community it is helping with the opportunity to see the county at the same time. If they don't get involved in the community then cross-culture understanding would not be the case because there won't be any respect.
1. Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem has caused a cultural conflict because he went against the social norm of standing and saluting the flag during the national anthem (which shows respect for those who are fighting for our freedom). Kaepernick was protesting to raise awareness of police brutality against African Americans, but this was not the time nor the place to do so. Saluting the flag during the national anthem is supporting our freedom, which is supposed to be a positive feeling of pride, but Kaepernick took this opportunity to show the negative actions being done in the United States. The reason his protest was successful in becoming a cultural conflict was because of his fame and how he did it at such a big event; had it been an African American who was not famous, the conflict would not have arisen to become as big of a deal.
ReplyDelete2. Volunteer tourism does help inhibit cross-cultural understanding because it allows people from different countries work with people of a different country and culture than them. I do not think that they can get a full understanding of the other culture because you would only be working with those in need or other volunteers of that culture and they would be missing out on some of the other types of people within the culture. However, I do still believe that volunteering in another culture raises people's awareness of that culture because they are face-to-face with those of the other culture and have the opportunity to learn about that culture.
1.I feel that the protest is a cultural conflict due to what has been occurring with the police as well as everyone else. We are all not treated equal. There are still people treating others badly due to their color or the way they speak and that is wrong.
ReplyDelete2. Volunteer tourism does help with understanding of that culture by viewing what they specifically do as well as take part in something they may be doing. This helps show there are many types of lifestyles other than American and it is something that can be beneficial when its your turn to raise a family and how you choose to raise the family for example.
1. It is a cultural conflict because everyone stands for the national anthem and with him not doing so because of his protest for people of his race not being treateed correctly which caused a conflict.
ReplyDelete2. Volunteer tourism helps understand cultures. They get to see how other peoples lifestyle and it helps learn about other cultures.
1. This is a cultural conflict because it goes against what the normal is in our society. The national anthem has always been known as repeat to stand and honor our nation. H picked the wrong time to protest the conflict with the rasism between police and African Americans.
ReplyDelete2. Volunteer tourism helps to understand other cultures and their lifestyles. This can also help to raise awareness on how the other areas of our world and their standings.
1. This is a cultural conflict since the norm is to stand while honoring our nations flag. He is protesting the conflict of racism which is still a huge problem in our country. However, this is not the best way to protest the situation.
ReplyDelete2. Volunteer tourism helps us to understand the different lifestyles of other cultures. This is a great way for people to get the best insight of other societies.
1) it is a cultural conflict because it goes against the cultural normal of standing for the United States national anthem. It has always been known that you stand in honor of our nation.
ReplyDelete2.Volunteer tourism helps to understand other cultures and their lifestyles because they are able to work where they are touring which allows them to get a better understanding of their culture. It is also beneficial to the other culture as well.
1. Yes I do think that this is a cultural conflict because the social norm is to stand with your hand over your heart during the national anthem. When is sits, this is going against that norm.
ReplyDelete2. I think that Volunteer tourism help people to understand what is going on in other cultures. By helping others in their home and culture, it helps us to better understand other cultures.
